Traverse City, Michigan is a fabulous vacation spot. 5 fun things to do in Traverse City? Seriously? There are so many more than 5. I’m going to give you 5 things for grown-ups AND 5 things for families.

As a Michigander, I have to share this great vacation spot. It’s beautiful – hills, water, sailboats, and vineyards. Don’t forget those sunsets! It’s been a favorite spot for my husband and I to visit not just for an anniversary getaway but also for family fun.

5 Fun Things to Do in Traverse City

Grown-up Spots

  • Wineries and Microbrews – There are too many to list them all! A few of our favorites are: Peninsula Cellars, Leelanau Cellars, and Shady Lane Cellars. I am not a beer fan, but my husband’s favorite stop was North Peak. It is a restaurant too and we really enjoyed our meal.
  • Downtown Shopping – Farmer’s Market and specialty shop – you’ll find something for sure. It’s about taking time to leisurely walk down tree-lined streets and enjoying the unique buildings and all that the downtown area has to offer.
  • Tall Ship Sailing – Take a Wine Tasting Cruise and enjoy specially catered cuisine and wine from a local vineyard. Wine not your thing? They also have an Entertainment Nights Cruise and Microbrew Tasting Cruise.
  • Dining or a Foodie Tour – Traverse City has great places to dine. So many places and so little time! Ha! One great spot is the Apache Trout Grill. It’s right off Grand Traverse Bay. They don’t take reservations and the wait could be a couple of hours – so be prepared. Or take a Foodie Tour! Bon Appetit named Traverse City one of America’s five top foodie towns. We haven’t tried one yet and it’s on my list for our next visit.
  • Golf – if you are a golfer, you won’t be disappointed. It’s been voted in the top 6 golf destinations by Golf Magazine.

Family Spots

Traverse City

  • Great Wolf Lodge – What’s not to love? An indoor water park that’s always 80 degrees – even in winter! After swim and water fun, the kids can run around in the hotel and go on a quest with MagiQuest. There’s also a spa just for kids and even Cub Club for activities and crafts. There’s so much more! Check out their website for all the details.
  • Sleeping Bear Dunes – Hiking trails, dune climb, visitor center, and maritime museum – and all with breathtaking scenery.
  • Beaches – many choices! Sometimes splashing, swimming and building sand castles is all a kid really wants.
  • Tall Ship Sailing – Yep, I had this on the adult list, but they have a sail that the kids would love! On the Moomer’s Ice Cream Sail, you get to sample ice cream while enjoying your afternoon sail.
  • Outdoor Recreation – paddle boats, fishing, tubing, cherry picking – the ideas are endless!

If you like special events, Traverse City won’t let you down. The National Cherry Festival and the Traverse City Film Festival happens every July.

There’s something for everyone in Traverse City. Make sure you take time to just take in the beautiful surroundings. It’s a great place to relax and recharge.
